pHadjustment

pHadjustment is the process of changing the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution to a desired pH value. It is a common step in laboratory work, chemical manufacturing, water treatment, and agriculture, where many reactions and biological systems require a specific pH range for stability and performance.

The pH is measured with a calibrated pH meter or indicator strips; adjustments are made by adding small amounts of acid or base with thorough mixing. Common acids include hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid; common bases include sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. In some cases, buffers such as phosphate or acetate systems are used to hold pH steady after initial adjustment. Titration curves are used to estimate how much titrant is needed, and the process is often performed gradually to avoid overshoot. Temperature can affect pH readings and the effectiveness of adjustments.

Applications include drinking water treatment, aquaculture, hydroponics and soil management, food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical formulation, and laboratory experiments.

Safety and limitations: improper handling of caustic or corrosive reagents can cause burns; pH adjustments can introduce salts or change alkalinity and buffering capacity, which may require simultaneous management of total dissolved solids or carbonate hardness. pH control is sometimes transient, requiring ongoing monitoring.
