This supplemental oxygen is used to correct hypoxemia, a condition characterized by abnormally low levels of oxygen in the blood. Hypoxemia can arise from various causes, including lung diseases such as pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary embolism, as well as heart conditions and severe trauma.

The administration of oxygen can be achieved through several methods. Nasal cannulas, which are small tubes inserted into the nostrils, are a common and comfortable way to deliver low to moderate concentrations of oxygen. Face masks, such as simple masks or non-rebreather masks, can deliver higher concentrations of oxygen. For patients requiring more precise control or higher flow rates, devices like high-flow nasal cannulas or mechanical ventilators may be employed.

The goal of oxigénadás is to improve tissue oxygenation, alleviate symptoms like shortness of breath and cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin), and prevent organ damage associated with low oxygen levels. It is a critical intervention in emergency medicine and critical care settings, as well as a long-term management strategy for some chronic respiratory conditions. While generally safe, oxygen therapy requires careful monitoring to avoid potential complications, such as oxygen toxicity or respiratory depression in certain individuals. The specific delivery method and flow rate are determined by the patient's clinical condition and medical assessment.
