Oxidase-catalyzed reactions refer to chemical transformations driven by oxidases, a group of enzymes that catalyze oxidation reactions with molecular oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. In these reactions, electrons are transferred from a substrate to oxygen, producing reduced oxygen species such as water or hydrogen peroxide. This distinguishes oxidases from dehydrogenases, which use other electron acceptors such as cofactors or carrier molecules rather than oxygen.

Mechanistically, oxidases typically rely on cofactors such as flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), flavin mononucleotide (FMN), heme, or copper centers to shuttle electrons from the substrate to O2. Depending on the enzyme and reaction, the reduction of O2 yields either water (H2O) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a byproduct. Some oxidases function in membrane-bound systems, such as the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase complex that reduces O2 to water in cellular respiration, while others are soluble enzymes acting in various cellular compartments or in the extracellular environment.

Examples and classifications include flavin-dependent oxidases (e.g., glucose oxidase), copper-containing oxidases, and heme-containing oxidases (e.g., cytochrome c oxidase). Additional enzymes such as xanthine oxidase, urate oxidase, and lysyl oxidase also catalyze oxidase-type reactions, often producing H2O2 as a side product.

Biological roles are diverse, spanning energy production in respiration, fatty acid metabolism in peroxisomes, and various biosynthetic pathways. Oxidase activity is relevant to physiology and redox homeostasis, because hydrogen peroxide can act as a signaling molecule but also contribute to oxidative stress if not controlled.

Applications of oxidase-catalyzed reactions include biosensing (notably glucose oxidase in glucose meters), biocatalysis, and industrial oxidation processes, with accompanying need for antioxidant defenses such as catalase to mitigate H2O2 accumulation.
