Otékání, also known as edema, is a medical condition characterized by the swelling of body tissues caused by an abnormal accumulation of fluid. This fluid, typically interstitial fluid, builds up in the spaces between cells. While edema can affect any part of the body, it is most commonly observed in the limbs, particularly the legs, ankles, and feet.

There are various causes for otékání. Localized edema can result from injuries such as sprains or fractures, insect bites, or allergic reactions. It can also be a symptom of infections, inflammation, or a blockage in a blood vessel, like deep vein thrombosis. Diagnosing the cause of otékání typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and potentially diagnostic tests such as blood work, urine tests, or imaging studies. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause and may include addressing the primary medical condition, lifestyle modifications like reducing salt intake or elevating the affected limb, and diuretics to help the body eliminate excess fluid.
