The primary characteristic of an ottosäiliö is its internal construction, which typically involves a foam or porous material filling the interior of the tank. This filling serves a crucial safety function. In the event of a crash or impact, the foam helps to absorb energy and prevent fuel spillage or sloshing. This significantly reduces the risk of fire or explosion.

These tanks are commonly used in racing cars, rally cars, and other forms of motorsport where safety regulations often mandate the use of such specialized fuel containment systems.
