Ottosäiliöt

Ottosäiliöt, also known as Otto tanks, are a type of fuel tank designed for specific automotive applications, particularly in motorsport. The name derives from their inventor, who developed them as a safer alternative to conventional fuel tanks. The primary characteristic of an ottosäiliö is its internal construction, which typically involves a foam or porous material filling the interior of the tank. This filling serves a crucial safety function. In the event of a crash or impact, the foam helps to absorb energy and prevent fuel spillage or sloshing. This significantly reduces the risk of fire or explosion.

These tanks are commonly used in racing cars, rally cars, and other forms of motorsport where safety regulations often mandate the use of such specialized fuel containment systems. The foam material is usually fire-retardant and chemically inert, ensuring it does not react with the fuel. While they offer enhanced safety, ottosäiliöt can sometimes be slightly heavier and more expensive than standard fuel tanks. They are designed to meet stringent safety standards set by motorsport governing bodies. The internal structure also helps to ensure a more consistent fuel supply to the engine, even under extreme G-forces experienced during racing.
