Otossmäärän, also known as otosclerosis or otospongiosis, is a chronic ear condition characterized by abnormal bone growth in the middle ear. This disorder primarily affects the stapes, one of the three tiny bones (ossicles) that transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. The condition often leads to conductive hearing loss, where sound waves are not efficiently conducted through the middle ear to the inner ear.

The exact cause of otosclerosis remains unclear, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. The disorder tends to run in families, suggesting a hereditary component. Additionally, hormonal influences, such as those related to pregnancy or puberty, may play a role in its development.

Symptoms of otosclerosis typically include progressive hearing loss, often starting in one ear before affecting both. Some individuals may also experience tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or a sensation of fullness in the ear. In rare cases, the condition can lead to vertigo or dizziness. The hearing loss is usually gradual and may fluctuate, sometimes improving temporarily with changes in air pressure, such as during an airplane descent or ascent.

Diagnosis involves a thorough medical history review, physical examination, and audiometric testing to assess hearing levels. Imaging studies, such as a CT scan or MRI, may be used to visualize the abnormal bone growth. A tuning fork test, such as the Rinne or Weber test, can also help differentiate between conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

Treatment options for otosclerosis include hearing aids, which amplify sound to compensate for hearing loss. Surgical intervention, known as stapedectomy or stapedotomy, is often recommended for individuals with significant hearing loss that does not respond well to other treatments. During this procedure, the affected stapes is removed or partially opened, and a prosthetic replacement is inserted to restore proper sound conduction.

With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many individuals with otosclerosis experience improved hearing and quality of life. Regular follow-ups with an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist) are essential to monitor the progression of the condition and adjust treatment as needed.
