Ostyrbarhet is a Swedish term used to describe the property of a system, process, or situation that is difficult or impossible to steer or influence with available control inputs. It denotes a high degree of resistance to controllability, yielding outcomes that are hard to predict or guide, even when traditional control methods are applied. Ostyrbarhet is not the same as chaos; it can arise in deterministic nonlinear systems and in complex adaptive systems where many interacting components and delays blur the effect of interventions.

Etymology: The word is formed from styrbarhet “controllability” with the negating prefix o- and the abstract noun suffix -het. It is used in Swedish-language discussions of control, system design, and complexity.

Contexts: In engineering, ostyrbarhet can describe highly nonlinear dynamics, saturation, time delays, and model uncertainty that limit the effectiveness of feedback. In the natural and social sciences, it may refer to phenomena that respond weakly to interventions or to situations where information is incomplete. In practice, ostyrbarhet is treated as a continuum: some systems can be steered roughly, others only in limited aspects, and some resist direction even with sophisticated methods.
