Osteofyten, commonly known as bone spurs, are smooth, hard bony outgrowths that can form along the edges of bones. They are often a consequence of aging and wear and tear on the joints, a process called osteoarthritis. When the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in a joint begins to break down, the body may respond by creating these extra bone formations in an attempt to strengthen the weakened area. Osteofyten can also develop in response to injury or inflammation.
