Osteoartriitti, often referred to as osteoarthritis, is a degenerative joint disease and the most common form of arthritis. It affects the cartilage, the smooth, slippery tissue that cushions the ends of bones within a joint. Over time, this cartilage can break down, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in the affected joints.

The exact cause of osteoarthritis is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of factors including aging, genetics, overuse or injury to a joint, and being overweight. While it can affect any joint, it is most commonly found in the knees, hips, hands, and spine. Symptoms can develop gradually and may include joint pain that worsens with activity, stiffness that is more pronounced after periods of rest, and a grating sensation when the joint is used. Swelling and a decrease in the range of motion are also common.

Diagnosis of osteoarthritis typically involves a physical examination, a review of medical history, and often imaging tests such as X-rays, which can reveal joint space narrowing, bone spurs, and other characteristic changes. While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, treatments focus on managing symptoms and improving function. These can include lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and exercise, pain relievers, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery to repair or replace the damaged joint.
