Ossements are bone fragments or fossilized remains recovered from archaeological, paleontological, or forensic contexts. The term is used in some languages and older literature to denote small or disarticulated pieces of bone, as opposed to complete skeletal elements. In contemporary English, terms such as bone fragments or osseous remains are more common, but ossements may appear in regional or historical writings.

Etymology and scope: the word derives from Latin os, bone. Ossements can derive from any vertebrate, including humans, and may range from tiny splinters to larger fragments. They can result from natural processes, such as weathering and scavenging, or from human activities, such as butchery, tool use, or burial practices.

Analysis and interpretation: professionals study ossements through osteology to determine species or taxon, approximate age at death, and, when possible, sex. Fragmentary material often limits interpretation of individual life history, but accumulated ossements can reveal subsistence strategies, mobility, and social organization. Pathologies, traumas, and human modification (for example cut marks or burn marks) may be evident on these fragments. Dating is achieved by radiocarbon analysis of collagen or by stratigraphic association with dated materials.

Preservation and collection: ossements require careful excavation, labeling, and Provenance documentation. Preservation states vary with environmental conditions, affecting collagen integrity and surface features.
