Osoitteenkäännökset, commonly known in English as Address Translation, is a fundamental process in computer networking that allows devices to communicate with each other using different addressing schemes. The most prominent example is the translation between Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and Media Access Control (MAC) addresses. Every device connected to a network has both an IP address, which is a logical identifier used for routing data across networks, and a MAC address, which is a unique physical hardware identifier assigned to network interface controllers.

When a device needs to send data to another device on the same local network, it uses the IP address of the destination. However, data at the link layer is transmitted using MAC addresses. Therefore, the sending device needs to determine the MAC address corresponding to the destination IP address. This is typically achieved through the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). The sending device broadcasts an ARP request containing the destination IP address. The device on the network that has that IP address responds with its MAC address, allowing the sender to construct the correct Ethernet frame for delivery.

NAT is used to map private IP addresses used within a local network to a single public IP address when communicating with the internet.
