Ortopédia is a branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. This system includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. The word itself comes from the Greek words "orthos" meaning straight and "paideia" meaning child, reflecting its historical origins in correcting deformities in children. However, modern orthopedic practice encompasses a wide range of ages and conditions in adults as well.

Orthopedic surgeons deal with a variety of issues, such as fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains, arthritis, osteoporosis, back pain, sports injuries, and congenital abnormalities. Treatment approaches can be surgical, involving procedures like joint replacements, fracture repair, or arthroscopy, or non-surgical, including medication, physical therapy, casting, or bracing. The goal of orthopedic care is to restore function, relieve pain, and improve the quality of life for patients. Specialists often further sub-specialize in areas like hand surgery, spine surgery, sports medicine, or pediatric orthopedics.
