Orthoferric refers to compounds or materials related to orthoferrite, a mineral and class of iron–titanium oxide (FeTiO3) that crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R3c. The mineral itself is part of the ilmenite supergroup and is commonly found in metamorphic and igneous rocks. Orthoferrite exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior below the Néel temperature of approximately 950 K and is known for its high dielectric constant, making it useful in electronic applications.

In materials science, the term orthoferric is often used to describe oxides that adopt the same crystal structure as orthoferrite but contain different transition metals or lanthanides. These orthoferric perovskites show a wide range of magnetic, electrical, and optical properties, including multiferroicity and spin–orbit coupling effects. Researchers investigate orthoferric compounds to develop spintronic devices, magnetic sensors, and memory storage technologies.

The synthesis of orthoferric materials typically involves solid-state reactions, sol–gel processes, or hydrothermal methods. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering, and spectroscopy are employed to confirm crystal symmetry, stoichiometry, and magnetic ordering. Because orthoferric materials can exhibit both ferroelectric and magnetic order, they are studied as potential candidate systems for cross-coupled functional devices.
