When a magnetic core saturates, its permeability, which is a measure of how easily it can be magnetized, drops drastically. This leads to a sharp increase in the magnetizing current required to produce a given magnetic flux. In transformers, this can cause a significant increase in the primary current, potentially leading to overheating and damage. In inductors, saturation can lead to a loss of inductance, altering the circuit's behavior.

Several factors can contribute to orsaturation, including the design of the core material, the operating temperature, and the applied voltage or current. Core materials are characterized by their saturation flux density (Bsat), which indicates the maximum flux they can handle. Exceeding this limit will result in saturation.
