Field and laboratory work form the core of the discipline. Researchers use tools such as mist nets, banding programs, radio or GPS tracking, acoustic recording, and genetic analysis to investigate migration, foraging, mating systems, vocal communication, and disease dynamics. Laboratory work may address anatomy, physiology, genomics, or endocrinology to understand how birds function and adapt.

Education and career paths typically require at least a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field, with many positions requiring graduate study (master’s or PhD). Ornithologists work in universities, natural history museums, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, or private industry, often collaborating with conservationists, ecologists, and policymakers to apply scientific findings to habitat management and species protection.

Professional communities include national and international societies such as the American Ornithological Society and the British Ornithologists’ Union. They publish journals including The Auk, Ibis, and Journal of Avian Biology. Citizen science projects like eBird and the Christmas Bird Count also play a significant role in collecting large-scale avian data and engaging the public in bird science.
