Oppisuunti is a term used in Finnish vocational education and training to describe the direction or trajectory of an apprenticeship program. It refers to how a student will acquire competences through a combination of on-the-job training in a workplace and theoretical studies provided by an educational institution. The oppisuunti is defined in the individual learning plan (oppimissuunnitelma) prepared together by the student, the employer, and the school, and it guides the selection of work tasks, study modules, and the pace of progression.

Purpose and scope

The oppisuunti aims to ensure that training aligns with the requirements of the relevant vocational qualification and with the learner’s prior knowledge and career goals. It helps tailor the apprenticeship to sector needs and to the learner’s strengths, setting concrete competence goals to be demonstrated during the course of the apprenticeship.

Content and examples

A trainee’s oppisuunti may emphasize different areas depending on the field. For example, in the construction sector it might prioritize practical carpentry skills and safety procedures, while in logistics it might focus on warehousing, inventory management, and process optimization. The plan outlines the key tasks, required modules, and the work-based assessments used to verify progress.

Implementation and governance

The oppisuunti is implemented within the oppisopimuskoulutus framework and is aligned with the national vocational qualifications framework. Progress is reviewed periodically, and the plan can be adjusted in response to learning needs or changes in the workplace or industry standards.
