Oppdriftsnivået, often translated as the "buoyancy level" or "neutral buoyancy level," is a concept primarily used in oceanography and marine biology. It refers to the depth at which an object or organism is neutrally buoyant. This means that the object's density is exactly equal to the density of the surrounding water, resulting in no net force of buoyancy or gravitational pull causing it to sink or rise.

An organism is neutrally buoyant when its weight is precisely balanced by the buoyant force exerted on it by the water. This state allows the organism to remain suspended at a particular depth with minimal energy expenditure. Many marine animals, particularly fish, achieve neutral buoyancy through the use of a swim bladder. This internal gas-filled organ can be adjusted in volume to change the organism's overall density, allowing it to control its position in the water column.

The oppdriftsnivået is influenced by several factors including water temperature, salinity, and pressure, all of which affect water density. Organisms living in different oceanic zones may have evolved to maintain neutral buoyancy at different depths due to these variations.
