Nitrogen oxides are primarily formed when nitrogen and oxygen in the air react at high temperatures, a common occurrence in engines and furnaces. When released into the atmosphere, these oxides undergo chemical transformations. Sulfur dioxide can be converted into sulfuric acid, while nitrogen oxides can form nitric acid. These acids are key components of acid rain, which can damage forests, lakes, and buildings.

Furthermore, NOx contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone, a harmful air pollutant that irritates the lungs and exacerbates respiratory problems. Both NOx and SOx can also contribute to the formation of fine particulate matter, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
