Oksidipäästöt, often referred to as nitrogen oxides (NOx) or sulfur oxides (SOx), are atmospheric pollutants that result from the combustion of fossil fuels and other industrial processes. These emissions play a significant role in environmental issues.

Nitrogen oxides are primarily formed when nitrogen and oxygen in the air react at high temperatures, a common occurrence in engines and furnaces. Major sources include vehicles, power plants, and industrial boilers. Sulfur oxides, on the other hand, are typically released when burning fuels containing sulfur, such as coal and heavy oil.

When released into the atmosphere, these oxides undergo chemical transformations. Sulfur dioxide can be converted into sulfuric acid, while nitrogen oxides can form nitric acid. These acids are key components of acid rain, which can damage forests, lakes, and buildings.

Furthermore, NOx contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone, a harmful air pollutant that irritates the lungs and exacerbates respiratory problems. Both NOx and SOx can also contribute to the formation of fine particulate matter, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

Mitigation strategies for oksidipäästöt include the use of cleaner fuels, improved combustion technologies, and emission control systems such as catalytic converters and scrubbers. Regulations and international agreements aim to reduce these emissions to protect air quality and public health.
