Oksidikerrospäällystykset, commonly referred to as oxide coatings, are protective or functional layers formed on the surface of a material, typically a metal, through an oxidation process. These coatings can be naturally occurring or intentionally applied.

Natural oxidation, or tarnishing, occurs when a metal reacts with oxygen in the environment. For example, iron rusts to form iron oxides, and copper develops a green patina of copper oxides and carbonates. While some natural oxide layers offer a degree of protection, they can also be detrimental, leading to material degradation.

Intentionally applied oxide coatings are created through various methods, including anodizing, thermal oxidation, and chemical vapor deposition. Anodizing, a common electrochemical process for metals like aluminum and titanium, thickens the naturally occurring oxide layer, significantly enhancing its corrosion resistance, hardness, and electrical insulation properties. Thermal oxidation involves heating the material in an oxygen-rich atmosphere to form a controlled oxide layer.

These engineered oxide coatings serve a wide range of applications. They are crucial in preventing corrosion in aerospace, automotive, and construction industries. In electronics, they can act as insulators or dielectric layers. Certain oxide coatings also possess unique optical properties, used in anti-reflective surfaces or decorative finishes. The specific composition and structure of the oxide layer determine its performance characteristics, making them a versatile surface treatment technology.
