Occupational safety refers to the practices, policies, and programs designed to protect workers from injuries and illnesses arising from workplace activities. It encompasses hazard identification, risk assessment, and preventive measures across industries. The goal is to create a safe and healthy working environment and to reduce work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

The core approach follows a risk management process: identify hazards, assess risks, implement controls using the hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE), and monitor effectiveness. It covers physical hazards such as machinery, noise, and heat; chemical hazards such as airborne substances and solvents; biological hazards such as infectious agents; ergonomic issues like repetitive motion and poor posture; and psychosocial factors including stress and violence.

Regulatory frameworks include national and international standards. In the United States, OSHA establishes workplace safety standards and enforcement; other regions follow guidelines from labor or health ministries. Internationally, ISO 45001 specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety management system. Compliance often involves training, hazard communication, incident reporting, and recordkeeping.

Effective programs emphasize worker participation, safety culture, and continuous improvement. Employers conduct training, inspections, near-miss reporting, and root cause analysis of incidents. Metrics such as injury rates, days away from work, and the cost of injuries are used to assess performance. Ongoing risk assessments and management reviews aim to prevent harm and support worker well-being.
