Obwarowa is a Polish-derived term related to defensive works and fortifications built to protect settlements, castles, or strategic sites. The word stems from the verb obwarować, meaning to fortify or surround with defensive barriers, and is used in historical and architectural contexts to denote ringworks, walls, ramparts, and associated structures arranged to impede attackers.

Typical obwarowa installations combine earthworks, stone or brick walls, wooden palisades, towers, and gatehouses. They were designed to control access, provide elevated positions for defenders, and absorb or deflect artillery and siege efforts as military technology evolved. Layouts vary with terrain and period, ranging from simple earthen ramparts around small settlements to elaborate multi-bastioned systems protecting urban centers.

Obwarowa features are commonly associated with the medieval and early modern periods in Central and Eastern Europe, where regional materials and building traditions influenced form and construction techniques. Over time many obwarowa structures were modified, dismantled, or incorporated into later urban development. In the present day surviving fragments are studied by archaeologists and conservators and may be conserved as cultural heritage, offering insight into historical defensive strategies and community organization.
