Námuvinnsla is the set of activities by which mineral resources are extracted from the Earth and prepared for use. In Icelandic usage, the term covers both mining and the subsequent processing that concentrates valuable minerals and removes waste material, with the aim of producing a marketable product while managing environmental and economic factors.

Core stages typically include exploration and evaluation to determine ore content and extent; mining, which may be open-pit or underground; and ore processing or beneficiation. Processing begins with comminution (crushing and grinding) to liberate minerals, followed by separation methods such as flotation, gravity concentration, and magnetic or electrostatic separation, yielding concentrates or refined metals.

Environmental considerations are central to modern námuvinnsla. Operations generate waste rock and tailings, consume energy and water, and can affect air and water quality. Responsible practice relies on environmental impact assessments, proper waste management, water treatment, energy efficiency, and rehabilitation after mine closure, along with regulatory compliance and stakeholder engagement.

Economic and technological factors shape the industry. Ore grade, processing costs, capital requirements, and metal prices determine viability. Advances in automation, process control, and sustainable technologies—such as improved ore sorting and better tailings management—influence where and how mining and processing are carried out and support efforts toward a circular economy.
