Nutrient-demanding is a descriptive term used in biology and agronomy to describe organisms, tissues, or ecosystems that require relatively large inputs of nutrients to support growth, maintenance, and reproduction. It contrasts with nutrient-efficient or nutrient-sparing groups, which achieve biomass with lower nutrient input.

In agriculture, many field crops such as maize, rice, and leafy vegetables are considered nutrient-demanding because their high growth rates and large biomass production demand substantial supplies of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients. To achieve optimal yields, farmers tailor fertilizer programs to match the crop's demand over the growing season, taking into account soil fertility, climate, and cultivar characteristics. In natural ecosystems, fast-growing species, annuals, and early-successional communities often display high nutrient demand, especially in fertile environments, whereas species adapted to nutrient-poor soils tend to have lower demands.

Factors influencing nutrient demand include growth rate, tissue nutrient concentrations (stoichiometry), and nutrient-use efficiency.
