A numerologist is a practitioner of numerology, a belief system that assigns numeric values to letters and dates to derive meanings about a person’s character, life path, and potential events. Numerology is used for self-understanding, personal development, relationship guidance, and decision making in various cultural and New Age contexts.

Modern numerology has several major traditions, including Pythagorean and Chaldean systems. In practice, a numerologist typically constructs a numerology chart from a person’s birth date and full name. Common components include the life path number, calculated from birth date; the destiny (or expression) number, derived from the full birth name; the soul urge (heart’s desire) number from vowels; and the personality number from consonants. A personal year number, obtained from the current year combined with the birth date, is sometimes used to assess upcoming themes. Each number 1 through 9 is ascribed symbolic meanings, which are then interpreted to describe traits or trends. Some practitioners also use additional calculations, such as karmic debts or compatibility charts.

Numerology remains a controversial field. It is regarded by mainstream science as a pseudoscience with no validated empirical support. Proponents argue that numerology offers symbolic insight, patterns, and guidance rather than predictive certainty. Critics caution against over-interpretation, dismiss the method as arbitrary, and emphasize cultural and psychological factors in its appeal. In popular culture, numerologists may appear in self-help literature, astrology or spiritual communities, as well as in entertainment contexts.
