Novorodenca is a newborn infant, typically within the neonatal period from birth through the first 28 days. The term is used in several Slavic languages; in English the equivalents are newborn or neonate. It denotes the earliest phase of human life after birth and a time of rapid physiological adjustment.

Physical characteristics of a novorodenca commonly include a birth weight around 2.5 to 4.0 kilograms and a length of about 48 to 53 centimeters, with a head circumference of roughly 32 to 35 centimeters. The skin may be wrinkled or covered with vernix, and hair (lanugo) may be present. Newborns display reflexes such as rooting, sucking, grasping, and a stepping reflex, and their sense of hearing is functional while vision is limited and best at close range.

Feeding and sleep patterns vary, but newborns typically feed on demand, about every 2 to 3 hours, whether breastfed or formula-fed. Growth and digestion progress steadily, with diapers and stools changing in frequency. Sleep amounts generally total around 14 to 17 hours per day, often in short bouts interspersed with periods of wakefulness.

Care for a novorodenca includes keeping the infant clean and dry, managing the umbilical cord stump, and dressing appropriately for temperature. Safe sleep practices emphasize placing the baby on the back in a crib or bassinet, avoiding loose bedding, and maintaining a smoke-free environment. Regular health checkups, newborn screening, and immunizations (such as Hepatitis B at birth in many regions) are part of standard care. Red flags include poor feeding, lethargy, fever, or breathing difficulties, which warrant prompt medical attention.
