Noteri is a term used in several languages to refer to notaries public. Etymologically linked to Latin notarius, the notary's role is to provide public authentication of documents and acts. Noteri may perform a range of duties depending on jurisdiction. Common functions include witnessing signatures, certifying copies of documents, administering oaths, and drafting or legalizing notarial acts such as deeds, wills, powers of attorney, and contracts. They may maintain public registers of real property, births, marriages, and other records, and advise clients on formal requirements for documents intended for use before courts or foreign authorities.

In civil law jurisdictions, notaries are professionals with formal legal training and possibly law degrees. They are appointed or commissioned by a government authority and hold a quasi-public office; their acts carry substantial evidentiary weight and may be required for certain transactions. Notaries may operate as independent practitioners or within notarial chambers.

In contrast, in common law countries a notary public typically has a more limited role, mainly attesting signatures and authenticating documents for international use; the office is often regulated by state or national law, and notaries may not provide legal advice or draft complex documents in the same way as an attorney.
