Nonreductivism is a philosophical stance that argues certain phenomena cannot be fully explained or understood by breaking them down into simpler constituent parts. This contrasts with reductivism, which posits that complex systems or phenomena can be understood by analyzing their basic components. Nonreductivists contend that emergent properties or holistic qualities of a system may be lost or misrepresented when subjected to a purely reductive analysis.

In metaphysics and philosophy of mind, nonreductivism is often discussed in relation to consciousness. Proponents argue that subjective experience, or qualia, cannot be reduced to purely physical or neurological processes. While brain activity may be correlated with conscious experience, nonreductivists believe this correlation does not equate to an explanation of the experience itself. They suggest that consciousness possesses irreducible properties that transcend the sum of its physical parts.

Similarly, in ethics, nonreductivists might argue that moral truths or values cannot be reduced to factual descriptions of the world or to psychological states. They believe that "ought" statements cannot be derived solely from "is" statements, pointing to an inherent normative dimension that resists reduction. This position suggests that moral reasoning involves an irreducible element of judgment or intuition.

Nonreductivism can also be applied to other fields, such as biology, where the complexity of living organisms and ecosystems may be seen as more than just the sum of their biological mechanisms. The interaction and organization of these parts can give rise to emergent behaviors and properties that are not predictable from studying the parts in isolation.
