Nonevolutionary is an adjective used in some scholarly and popular discourse to indicate that a process, pattern, or characteristic does not involve evolution, or is not explained by evolutionary theory. It is not a standard term in formal biology, and its meaning varies by field and author.

In biology and related disciplines, nonevolutionary may be used to describe traits or changes attributed to development, behavior, culture, or environment rather than genetic evolution. Some writers use it to contrast with evolutionary explanations, but this usage can blur distinct kinds of change and lead to ambiguity.

Contexts where nonevolutionary reasoning appears include developmental biology, where features are determined by ontogeny rather than selection; anthropology or linguistics, where cultural transmission or social factors drive change; and discussions of historical patterns in phylogenetics or ecology where non-genetic factors are emphasized.

Ambiguity and caveats accompany the term. Since evolution can refer to genetic change, speciation, or broader adaptive processes, labeling something as nonevolutionary can imply a false dichotomy. In many cases, more precise language is preferable, such as non-evolutionary mechanisms, developmental constraints, or cultural transmission. When used, nonevolutionary should be clearly defined to specify what processes are being excluded or contrasted.
