Noncotton is a broad textile category consisting of fibers other than cotton. It includes natural fibers such as linen (flax), wool, silk, hemp, ramie, and jute; animal fibers; as well as synthetic and regenerated fibers like polyester, nylon, acrylic, rayon, viscose, modal, lyocell, and spun blends. Noncotton fabrics are used in clothing, home textiles, and industrial applications, often to achieve different performance or aesthetic characteristics than cotton.

Natural noncotton fibers vary in feel and performance. Linen is strong, breathable, and quick-drying but can be prone to wrinkling. Wool offers insulation and moisture management, with temperature regulation. Silk is lightweight and smooth with a natural sheen. Other plant fibers such as hemp and ramie provide strength and durability, while jute is common in bags and upholstery backing. Regenerated and synthetic fibers diversify noncotton options. Viscose (rayon), modal, and lyocell are cellulose-based and can mimic natural fibers while offering different drape and absorbency. Polyester and nylon are durable and moisture-wicking, frequently used in performance apparel and blends. Blends of noncotton fibers with cotton or other fibers combine desired properties such as strength, stretch, or drape.

Care, performance, and sustainability vary across noncotton textiles. Cotton is often water-intensive to grow, while some noncotton fibers have lower resource footprints, though synthetic fibers raise concerns about microplastics. Choosing a noncotton fabric depends on desired comfort, durability, care requirements, and environmental considerations.
