Throughout film history, nonprofessional casting has been associated with realism, most prominently in Italian neorealism of the 1940s and 1950s, which emphasized real locations, nonstudio production, and dialogue drawn from ordinary speech. The approach aimed to reflect social conditions rather than theatrical performance. Since then, many directors have used nonactors to varying degrees, particularly in independent, documentary, and social realist cinema. Notable practitioners include the Dardenne brothers in Belgium and Ken Loach in the United Kingdom, who have routinely cast nonprofessional actors to convey immediacy and moral tension.

Techniques often accompany nonprofessional casting: minimal rehearsal, improvisation, natural lighting, and long takes to sustain realism; casting may involve extensive field scouting and auditions that prioritize life experience over training. While nonactors can lend credibility and fresh voices, they can also present challenges in consistency of delivery, vocal presence, or range, requiring sensitive directing and editing.
