Nitrogen releasing refers to processes and products that liberate nitrogen in soil in forms available for plant uptake, such as ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3−), or in organic forms that become mineralized over time. This concept is central to nutrient management, aiming to match nitrogen supply with plant demand while reducing losses to volatilization, leaching, or immobilization.

Nitrogen is released through several pathways. Mineralization, carried out by soil microorganisms, converts organic nitrogen in residues and humus into ammonium. Ammonium can then be oxidized to nitrate via nitrification under aerobic conditions. Urea and other nitrogenous compounds release nitrogen through hydrolysis, a reaction accelerated by the enzyme urease. In addition to these natural processes, certain fertilizers are designed to release nitrogen slowly or in a controlled manner to extend the supply period and improve uptake efficiency.

Types of nitrogen releasing materials include slow-release or controlled-release fertilizers, such as polymer- or sulfur-coated urea, as well as conventional fertilizers formulated for gradual dissolution. Organic amendments—manure, compost, crop residues, and cover crops—contribute to nitrogen release through mineralization, with the rate influenced by the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio and soil conditions. Biological nitrogen fixation also adds bioavailable nitrogen to soils, though this source operates through biological conversion rather than release of existing soil nitrogen.

Release rates are influenced by temperature, moisture, soil pH, microbial activity, soil texture, and the carbon content of organic matter. Effective use of nitrogen-releasing approaches requires consideration of crop needs, timing, and local environmental conditions to maximize uptake and minimize environmental impacts such as leaching or gaseous emissions.
