Nietoplaadbare is a Dutch term used to describe primary, non-rechargeable batteries. These batteries are designed for single use and must be replaced after their capacity is exhausted. They store chemical energy and convert it to electrical energy through irreversible chemical reactions. They differ from oplaadbare (rechargeable) batteries, which are meant to be renewed by applying electrical energy.

Common usanames and chemistries include alkaline (zink-mangaan dioxide), zinc-carbon, lithium primary cells, and button-cell silver oxide. Alkaline and zinc-carbon cells are widely used in everyday devices, while lithium primary cells offer higher energy density in compact formats. Nominal cell voltages are typically 1.5 volts for most cylindrical primary cells, with lithium primary cells often delivering around 3.0 volts per cell.

Nietoplaadbare batteries are favored in devices with low to moderate power drain and where long shelf life or low maintenance is important. Typical applications include remote controls, wall clocks, flashlights, toys, and certain medical devices. In recent years, improvements in device efficiency and the availability of rechargeable alternatives have shifted some usage toward oplaadbare batteries, but nietoplaadbare batteries remain common in many markets.

Disposal and safety are important considerations. They require proper disposal and recycling in accordance with local regulations, and should not be discarded with regular household waste where prohibited. Many regions offer dedicated collection programs. Recharging such batteries is unsafe and can lead to leakage, rupture, or fire, so they should be replaced rather than recharged. Handling should avoid short-circuiting and exposure to extreme heat.
