A nielunäyte, often translated as a throat swab or throat culture, is a medical diagnostic procedure used to collect a sample from the back of the throat. This sample is then typically sent to a laboratory for testing, most commonly to identify the presence of bacteria or viruses causing an infection. The most frequent target of a nielunäyte is Streptococcus pyogenes, the bacterium responsible for strep throat.

The procedure itself is generally quick and straightforward. A healthcare professional will usually use a sterile cotton swab or a similar collection device to gently rub the surface of the tonsils and the posterior pharyngeal wall. Care is taken to avoid touching the tongue or cheeks to ensure the sample is representative of the throat flora. The patient may experience a brief gagging sensation during the swabbing.

Once collected, the swab is placed in a special transport medium to preserve the microorganisms and prevent contamination. At the laboratory, the sample can be subjected to various tests. A rapid antigen detection test can provide results within minutes, while a throat culture, which involves growing the microorganisms on a nutrient agar plate, takes one to two days but is generally more sensitive and can identify specific bacterial species and their antibiotic sensitivities.

A positive nielunäyte result can confirm a diagnosis and guide appropriate treatment, such as prescribing antibiotics for bacterial infections. Conversely, a negative result can help rule out certain infections, preventing unnecessary medication. The nielunäyte is a common and valuable tool in the diagnosis of respiratory infections.
