Nickelchromiumiron refers to a family of nickel-based alloys composed primarily of nickel, chromium, and iron. The composition is engineered to provide a balance of oxidation resistance, high-temperature strength, and electrical resistance. The best-known example is Nichrome, a Ni-Cr alloy used for heating elements, which typically contains about 60–80% nickel and 15–25% chromium, with iron as a minor constituent. Other nickel-chromium-iron alloys include variants used in high-temperature applications, often grouped in the Inconel and Nimonic families; these alloys may add elements such as aluminum, niobium, titanium, molybdenum, or tungsten to improve creep resistance and maintain strength at elevated temperatures.

Properties of nickelchromiumiron alloys include good oxidation resistance in air at high temperatures, a high melting point, substantial strength and creep resistance, and relatively high electrical resistivity compared with pure nickel or iron. Ductility is typically maintained after appropriate annealing, enabling shaping and forming for various components.

Processing generally involves melting and alloying to achieve the desired composition, followed by hot or cold working and annealing to relieve stresses and optimize microstructure. These alloys can be drawn into wires for heating elements or fabricated into components through extrusion, forging, and machining.

Applications are broad and include heating elements for toasters, irons, and industrial furnaces, as well as resistors and components in devices that require stable performance at elevated temperatures. In aerospace and chemical processing, Ni-Cr-Fe alloys provide resistance to oxidation and creep under demanding conditions.
