Neurotoxicity refers to the ability of certain substances, known as neurotoxins, to cause damage to the nervous system. This damage can manifest in various ways, affecting both the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord). Neurotoxins can be natural products, such as venoms from snakes or certain plants, or they can be synthetic chemicals like pesticides, industrial pollutants, or some therapeutic drugs.

The mechanisms of neurotoxicity are diverse and depend on the specific neurotoxin. Some neurotoxins may interfere with neurotransmitter synthesis, release, or reuptake, disrupting communication between neurons. Others might damage the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibers, impairing signal transmission. Certain toxins can induce oxidative stress, leading to cellular damage and death, or they can directly target cellular structures within neurons.

Symptoms of neurotoxicity can range from mild and temporary to severe and permanent. Common signs include cognitive impairments like memory loss or difficulty concentrating, motor deficits such as tremors or weakness, sensory disturbances like numbness or tingling, and behavioral changes. In severe cases, neurotoxicity can lead to paralysis, seizures, coma, or even death. Diagnosis often involves a combination of clinical assessment, neurological examination, and sometimes specialized tests to identify the causative agent. Prevention and treatment focus on avoiding exposure to known neurotoxins and managing symptoms, although reversing established nerve damage can be challenging.
