neurouroloog

A neurouroloog, more commonly spelled neuro-urologist, is a physician who specializes in the neurological control of the urinary tract and in managing urinary disorders caused by nervous system disease or injury. The field, neuro-urology, combines elements of neurology and urology and is typically pursued as a subspecialty by clinicians who develop expertise in bladder function and continence.

Scope and conditions: Neuro-urologists evaluate patients with neurogenic bladder and voiding dysfunction stemming from spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson's disease, or congenital neurological disorders. They commonly treat urinary incontinence, urinary retention, and autonomic dysreflexia in high spinal injuries, and collaborate with other specialists in multidisciplinary teams.

Diagnosis and treatment: Assessments include medical history, neurological examination, bladder diaries, and urodynamic testing, supported by imaging studies such as MRI. Treatments range from behavioral therapies and timed voiding to clean intermittent catheterization, medications (for example antimuscarinics or beta-3 agonists), botulinum toxin injections into the detrusor muscle, neuromodulation, and, when appropriate, surgical interventions.

Training and practice: Training pathways vary by country, but a neuro-urologist generally holds a medical degree and specialty training in urology or neurology, with additional experience or certification in neuro-urology. They may work in academic medical centers, specialized clinics, or neuro-rehabilitation settings, often as part of a multidisciplinary team.
