Neuroudvikling, often translated as neurodevelopment, refers to the complex processes involved in the growth and maturation of the nervous system, particularly the brain, from conception through adolescence and into early adulthood. This intricate journey encompasses the generation of neurons, their migration to specific locations, the formation of connections between them (synapses), and the pruning of unnecessary connections. These processes are guided by a combination of genetic programming and environmental influences.

The stages of neuroudvikling begin early in prenatal development with neural tube formation, followed by the proliferation of neurons and glial cells. Neuronal migration is a critical phase where newly born neurons travel to their designated areas within the brain. Synaptogenesis, the formation of new synapses, is particularly rapid during infancy and childhood, establishing the neural circuits that underpin all cognitive functions. Later stages involve synaptic pruning, where less-used connections are eliminated, and myelination, the insulation of nerve fibers to improve signal transmission speed.

Disruptions in neuroudvikling can lead to a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders. These conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability, and learning disabilities, arise from alterations in the timing or execution of these fundamental developmental processes.
