Neuroneja (Finnish plural of neuron) are the basic cells of the nervous system, specialized to receive, process, and transmit information. They form complex networks that underlie sensation, movement, thought, and behavior. A typical neurone consists of a cell body (soma), multiple dendrites that receive signals, and a single long axon that conducts electrical impulses away from the cell. The axon may be insulated by a myelin sheath, which speeds transmission through saltatory conduction. At the end of the axon are synaptic terminals, where neurotransmitters are released to communicate with other neurones, muscle cells, or glands.

Communication within neural networks begins with an action potential, a rapid change in electrical charge that travels along the axon. When it reaches a synapse, it triggers chemical signaling across the synaptic cleft. The strength and timing of synaptic transmission influence learning and neural plasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt its connections.

Neurones are broadly categorized into sensory (afferent), motor (efferent), and interneurones, depending on their role in information flow. Glial cells provide metabolic support, insulation, and modulate synaptic function but do not transmit impulses themselves.

Neurones are distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. They develop from neural progenitor cells during embryogenesis and continue to adapt throughout life, though most neurogenesis occurs early in development. Dysfunction or loss of neurones is a feature of many neurological diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and demyelinating conditions.
