Nettverksterminaler, also known as network terminals or simply terminals, are devices that provide an interface for users to interact with a computer network. They would send keystrokes to the mainframe and display the output received.

With the advent of personal computers and distributed computing, the concept of the terminal has evolved. Many modern devices that connect to networks, such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, can function as terminals by running terminal emulator software. This software allows them to connect to remote servers or other network resources and interact with them as if they were a direct console.

In network infrastructure, the term "terminal" can also refer to any device connected to the network edge, such as a computer, printer, or sensor. These devices are the endpoints of the network, originating or terminating data flows. In some contexts, particularly in older networking architectures or specific industrial applications, dedicated hardware terminals might still be used for direct machine control or data entry. The core function remains the same: to provide a point of interaction and data exchange within a network environment.
