Nestemäiskristallilayeri, often referred to as liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, is a flat-panel display that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. These liquid crystals do not emit light themselves but rather block or allow light to pass through from a backlight source. A typical LCD consists of several layers, including a backlight, polarizing filters, electrodes, and the liquid crystal material itself.

The liquid crystals are organic compounds that exhibit properties of both conventional liquids and solid crystals. In an LCD, these molecules are arranged in a specific way between two polarized glass plates. When an electric current is applied to electrodes, the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules changes. This alteration in orientation affects the polarization of light passing through them.

By controlling the electric current applied to different segments of the liquid crystal layer, specific areas can be made to either transmit or block light. This selective blocking and transmission of light, often combined with color filters for color displays, creates the images seen on the screen. The speed at which the liquid crystal molecules can reorient themselves determines the response time of the display, impacting how smoothly motion is rendered. LCD technology has become ubiquitous in a wide range of electronic devices, from televisions and computer monitors to smartphones and calculators, due to its relatively low power consumption and ability to produce sharp images.
