Nestekidenäyttöpaneeli, often abbreviated as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), is a flat-panel display technology that utilizes the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. These crystals do not emit light themselves but rather block or allow light to pass through from a backlight, which is typically a fluorescent lamp or an LED. The arrangement of liquid crystals in a grid allows for precise control over individual pixels, which are the smallest controllable elements of a picture. Each pixel is typically divided into three sub-pixels, colored red, green, and blue, which can be individually illuminated at varying intensities to create a full spectrum of colors.

The operation of an LCD panel involves several layers. At its core is the liquid crystal layer sandwiched between two polarized glass substrates. An electric current is applied to the liquid crystals, which causes their molecular orientation to change. This change in orientation affects how polarized light from the backlight passes through the panel. By controlling the electrical current to each pixel, the amount of light that passes through can be adjusted, thus determining the brightness of that pixel. Color filters are then used to produce the desired color for each sub-pixel.

LCD technology has found widespread application in various electronic devices due to its energy efficiency, relatively low cost, and ability to produce sharp images. Common uses include computer monitors, televisions, smartphones, tablets, and digital cameras. Advancements in LCD technology, such as improved refresh rates, contrast ratios, and color accuracy, continue to enhance the viewing experience offered by these displays.
