Nenäverenvuoto, also known as epistaxis, is the loss of blood from the tissue lining the nose. It is a common occurrence that can affect people of all ages. The inside of the nose is lined with many small blood vessels, which are delicate and can easily be damaged. These fragile vessels are located close to the surface, making them prone to bleeding.

There are two main types of nosebleeds: anterior and posterior. Anterior nosebleeds are the most common and originate from the front of the nose. They are usually easier to control and less serious. Posterior nosebleeds originate from deeper within the nose, closer to the throat. These are less common but can be more severe and may require medical attention.

Several factors can contribute to nosebleeds. Dry air, especially during winter months or in arid climates, can dry out the nasal membranes, making them more susceptible to cracking and bleeding. Nasal trauma, such as a direct blow to the nose or vigorous nose-blowing, is another common cause. Allergies and colds can lead to inflammation and irritation of the nasal passages, increasing the risk of bleeding. Certain medications, like blood thinners or nasal sprays, can also play a role. In rare cases, underlying medical conditions may be responsible.

Most nosebleeds can be managed at home by sitting upright, leaning slightly forward, and pinching the soft part of the nose for 10-15 minutes. If bleeding is severe, frequent, or does not stop, seeking medical advice is recommended to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
