A neglefil is a hand tool used in personal grooming to shape and smooth nails. In Danish and Norwegian, the term refers to a nail file employed during manicures and pedicures to shorten the free edge, shape the nail and remove ridges or roughness.

Common types and materials include emery boards (abrasive sheets on cardboard or wood), metal files, glass or crystal files, ceramic files, and diamond-coated files. Emery boards are inexpensive and convenient but wear quickly. Glass and ceramic files are durable and gentler on natural nails, while metal files are fast but can be harsher. Diamond-coated files are effective on artificial nails and can be very durable. The choice often depends on whether the user is shaping natural nails or working with artificial nails and the desired finish.

Using a neglefil correctly involves hygiene and technique. Sanitize the tool and choose a suitable grit: finer grits (high numbers) for natural nails and finishing; coarser grits for shortening or artificial nails. File in one direction from the outer edge toward the center, applying light pressure; avoid sawing back and forth, which can split or weaken the nail. Shape following the natural nail edge and trim length with care. After shaping, smooth the edge with a finishing buffer if desired.

Hygiene and care: clean the file after use, dry it thoroughly, and replace when the abrasive layer wears down. Do not share personal nail files. Store in a dry place to prevent contamination and corrosion, especially for metal tools.
