Nauticalastronomical is an umbrella term used to describe the practice that integrates nautical navigation with astronomy. It covers methods and knowledge from observing celestial bodies to applying astronomical data for determining position at sea and for timekeeping. In common usage, the more standard phrases are nautical astronomy or celestial navigation, but the combined form appears in some scholarly and educational contexts.

Historically, nautical astronomy was central to maritime travel. Navigators used the altitudes of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars, measured with a sextant, along with a precise clock and a nautical almanac, to compute latitude and longitude. The computations relied on celestial tables, ephemerides, and mathematical rules such as the lunar-distance method and equal-altitude techniques to determine time and position.

Practices involve collecting observations, recording them in a navigational notebook, and applying calculations to derive lines of position that are then plotted on charts. Tools commonly cited include the sextant or octant, the chronometer, the nautical almanac, and the star catalogs printed in the almanac. Observations require corrections for refraction, atmospheric conditions, and instrument error, as well as careful timekeeping.

Today, Global Positioning System (GPS) has largely supplanted traditional celestial navigation for routine positioning. Nevertheless, nautical astronomy remains taught in marine training, used as a backup navigation method, and studied as a historical and scientific discipline. It also informs amateur and educational marine observation and contributes to the understanding of celestial reference frames in navigation science.
