Nattsikt, also known as night vision, refers to technology that allows individuals to see in low-light conditions or complete darkness. This is achieved through various methods, primarily by amplifying existing ambient light or by detecting infrared radiation emitted by objects.

One common type of night vision technology is image intensification. This process works by gathering even the smallest amounts of light, such as starlight or moonlight, and amplifying it through a series of electronic stages. The amplified light is then projected onto a phosphorescent screen, creating a visible image that appears green or white. This type of night vision is passive, meaning it does not emit any light and therefore cannot be detected by other night vision devices.

Another approach is thermal imaging. This technology detects the heat (infrared radiation) naturally emitted by all objects. Warmer objects emit more infrared radiation and appear brighter on the display, while cooler objects appear darker. Thermal imaging can see through darkness, fog, and smoke, making it useful for a wide range of applications, including search and rescue, surveillance, and hunting. Unlike image intensification, thermal imaging does not rely on ambient light.
