Nasenabfluss, also known as rhinorrhea or a runny nose, is the secretion of mucus from the nostrils. This physiological process is a normal bodily function aimed at moistening the nasal passages and trapping foreign particles like dust, pollen, and pathogens. The mucus produced by the nasal mucosa acts as a protective barrier, preventing irritants from reaching the lungs.

The consistency and color of nasenabfluss can vary depending on the underlying cause. Clear, thin mucus is often associated with environmental irritants, allergies, or the early stages of a viral infection. As an infection progresses, the mucus may thicken and change color to white, yellow, or green, indicating the presence of immune cells and cellular debris.

Various factors can trigger an increase in nasenabfluss. Common causes include the common cold and influenza viruses, allergic reactions to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, and irritants like smoke or strong perfumes.
