Nanotubech is a term used in speculative nanomaterials science to describe a family of tubular nanostructures that merge features of carbon nanotubes with programmable chirality and surface functionality. The name combines nanotube with a shorthand reference to chirality and chemical modification.

Structure and synthesis: Nanotubechs are envisioned as one- to multi-walled cylinders with nanoscale diameters and micrometer lengths. They may be built from carbon, silicon carbide, boron nitride, or inorganic polymers, rolled into tubes with a defined chiral axis. Surface groups or lattice distortions allow selective molecular interactions. Potential fabrication routes include template-assisted chemical vapor deposition, rolling up two-dimensional sheets, and bottom-up self-assembly of molecular precursors. Post-synthesis functionalization broadens their use.

Properties: Predicted to combine high mechanical strength and stiffness with tunable electrical behavior, ranging from insulating to metallic depending on composition and chirality. Optical and thermal properties are likewise tunable via diameter, wall number, and surface chemistry. Stability varies by material class, with inorganic variants offering high thermal resilience and organic or hybrid versions providing functional versatility.

Applications and status: In early-stage research, nanotubech concepts are explored for nanoelectronic interconnects, reinforcement in advanced composites, energy storage electrodes, and chemical or biological sensing. Realization faces challenges in achieving precise chirality control, scalable synthesis, defect management, and standardized characterization. There are no commercial nanotubech products at present, and the field remains exploratory, with interest centered on understanding fundamental structure–property relationships.
