Nanocraft is a term used in nanotechnology and science fiction to describe autonomous, nanoscale devices capable of manipulating materials or performing tasks at the molecular level. In practical discussions, it often denotes nanoscale machines or swarms of such devices that could be guided or powered to assemble structures, deliver therapeutics, repair tissues, or remediate environmental pollutants. The concept spans individual nanomotors as well as coordinated collectives that exhibit swarm-like behavior to achieve complex goals.

Design and operation concepts for nanocraft draw on several approaches. Molecular machines and DNA-based nanostructures provide means to create moving parts at the nanoscale, while external control methods such as magnetic, electric, optical, or chemical cues can direct their motion and assembly. Energy management is a central challenge, with proposals ranging from on-board energy sources to externally supplied power. Error correction, reliability, and precise control are critical considerations, as are biocompatibility and safety when medical or environmental applications are involved. Researchers also explore swarm robotics ideas, where many small units cooperate to accomplish tasks that are difficult for a single device.

Applications and status vary by field. In medicine, nanocraft concepts envision targeted drug delivery, in situ tissue repair, and diagnostic sensing. In materials science, they could enable bottom-up fabrication and self-healing materials. Environmental applications include pollutant capture and degradation at the source. Presently, no fully functional nanocraft exists; progress occurs in related areas such as nanoscale robotics, DNA nanotechnology, and nanomedicine, with substantial technical and ethical challenges to overcome before practical deployment.
